1989 Thierry Mugler Buick Collection Black Squiggle Hem Skirt Suit
This iconic black wool skirt suit was created by Manfred Thierry Mugler for his Fall / Winter 1989 to 1990 'Buick' collection. Fashion aficionados will instantly recognise this piece with its squiggle hemlines and architectural detailing. The Costume Institute at The Met in New York hold two of these black squiggle suits in their collection. Tailored to the defined contours that the designer became known for, the suit jacket draws in the waist and adds volume around the hips, emphasising and highlighting the feminine figure - a silhouette beloved by fans of this era of the brand. The abstract shaped front lapels are double-layered with an inside layer of black silk-cotton satin. Three snap closures and a hidden button secure the cross-over front, emphasising the nipped-in waist. The sleeves are detailed with a hem that stands upwards, making the padded shoulders even more dramatic. The jacket is lined with dark brown-black satin. The famous curves of Mugler’s silhouettes are echoed in the construction of the two slip pockets at the hips.
The skirt is high-waisted and cut from coordinating cloth. Like on the jacket, the hem is double-layered and cut to an avant-garde squiggle shape with a layer of black silk-cotton satin peeking from underneath. The skirt fastens at the back with a hidden tonal zip and the signature angular tab that hides two snap closures. It is unlined. The famous pale blue label reads “Thierry Mugler Paris”.
Made in France, this suit is in excellent vintage condition with no flaws of any note. The label reads 100% Wool and the lining is 60% Cotton, 40% Silk and states that this piece is a vintage French size 42. Vintage Mugler pieces come up smaller so I think this is better suited in modern sizes to a UK 10-12 or US 6-8 but please check our measurements closely below as there is no stretch to it.

Will you set anything aside for me before I come?
We are happy to find anything you may be interested in from our website - please let us know a week in advance.
We also have an extensive offline collection. If you let us know your size, style, favourite colour to wear and perhaps your budget, we can browse through our archive in advance of your appointment.
Do I need to bring anything with me?
Clients may wish to bring modern shapewear when trying on garments from certain eras, especially the 1950s. Vintage clothing was often worn with undergarments that shaped the waist and as such is tailored for them.
We have a huge variety of slip dresses and petticoats to complete your look; many of which are also for sale.
You may also wish to bring your favourite footwear. We often find a classic pair of nude shoes work well when trying on, or a pair in gold or silver.
Do you have a price range?
Many of our lower-priced pieces (under £150) are not available to buy online. Our prices range from £80 - £600 for separates. Dresses start at around £150 and go up to £2,500 for the very best antique pieces and designer vintage. Our bridalwear ranges from £300 - £3,000.
Can I bring anyone with me?
